YORKE AND FRAYNE SWEEP TO PAIR’S VICTORY.

Joe Yorke, (Saunton) and professional Adam Frayne, (St. Mellion), swept to an impressive victory in the 4 day Trevose International Pair's golf tournament held at Trevose during a week of superb weather. Their overall score of 336 was 12 strokes ahead of second place finishers Gary Lenaghan, (Trevose), and Mickey Turner, (Woburn), with Gary Wolstenholme, (Carus Green), and Steve Davis, (Trevose), in third place on 351. Frayne also won the professional’s prize with a total of 133 from Wolstenholme on 137.

Now in its twenty fourth consecutive year the event was co-sponsored by Callaway Golf; Golf International magazine; Peter Millar Clothing; Srixon; Gel Putting Systems and St. Austell Brewery. Open to amateurs and professionals, it is uniquely the only 72 hole tournament of its type with a different playing format each day.

This year 46 pairs, including twenty one professionals, played 18 holes each day with 2 ball better ball day 1; rye greensome day 2; foursomes day 3; and pairs aggregate day 4. Additionally, professionals competed in a 36 hole individual competition run concurrently with the main event.

On a low scoring first day Jonny Foster & Matt Hart posted a six under par better ball score of 64 to take a one shot lead over Mark Blaber & Paul Hendy and Warren & Chris Harmston. Six teams finished on 66 including Gary Wolstenholme & Steve Davis and Nick Gammon & Phil Rowe. With an individual score of 67 Wolstenholme shared the lead with Chris Harmston in the professional’s event, Jon Langmead and Adam Frayne were two strokes back on 69.

The second day Rye Greensomes proved difficult for the first day leaders and they slipped down the leader board. But Joe Yorke & Adam Frayne moved from three strokes back into a one stroke lead after a superb 64 gave them a two day total of 131. Gammon & Rowe also scored 64 to move into second place on 132, and Andrew Cloke & Neil Raymond secured third place after repeating their first round 67 for a total of 134. Wolstenholme & Davis held their position on 135 and Trevose professional Gary Lenaghan & Mickey Turner added a 69 to move up the leader board also on 135.

In the foursomes on day 3, Yorke & Frayne extended their lead over the field to 6 strokes with a five under par 67 after completing the first nine holes in 31 strokes, with 3 birdies and an eagle three. Lenaghan & Turner moved up to second place with a 69 and a total of 204, whilst Cloke & Raymond held their position in third place after a 72.5 gave them a total of 206.5. Amongst the leading pairs the casualties included Gammon & Rowe who slipped from second place overnight to eighth on 208 after a round of 76. Wolstenholme & Davis also slipped back with a 73 and a total of 208.

There was nowhere to hide on the final day with every stroke counting towards each pair’s aggregated score, and of course, the tournament. Yorke, with a level par 72, (76 – 4 handicap), and Frayne with a superb 66, (64 + 2 handicap), withstood the pressure and posted 138 for a total of 336 to hold their position at the top of the leader board. Lenaghan & Turner also held second place with a 144 for a total of 348 and Wolstenholme & Davis moved back up the leader board to third place on 351 with a day score of 143.
